Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division

"Emergency Food and Clothing Relief Since 1923"

A nonprofit agency in unique partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, Sunshine Division operates year-round to provide emergency, temporary food and clothing relief not only to Portland individuals and families who need it, but also to 30-some other agencies and charities in five counties. Thanks to generous donations of food and finances, Sunshine Division receives, manages, and distributes an average of 750 tons of food each year!  Then there’s Threadz, the clothing store, which may well be the most accessible, well supplied, and humanitarian clothing-relief service in the city, offering clients a dignified “shopping” experience.  Threadz serves over 5,000 households a year.

The Sunshine Division was unofficially founded in 1923 by a group of police officers and local businessmen who wanted to help their community.  The officers especially wanted to ensure that no one would ever need to resort to crime just to feed their family.  By 1933, the Sunshine Division was full-time operating unit of the Portland Police Bureau and today is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  The Sunshine Division places a high priority on the needs of families, particularly those with young children. Today, over 25,000 individuals benefit from various Sunshine Division programs and services each year.  As Portland has grown, so has the need for the Sunshine Division's programs and services.

Insights Teen Parent Program

"Positive Options for Young Families"

Insights Teen Parent Program is the primary agency serving teen
parents in Multnomah County. The mission of Insights Teen Parent
Program is to create a climate of positive options for young families.
Every year, Insights serves an average of 1,500 teen parent families,
offering services at the agency, in homes, schools, and in other local
non-profits. The vulnerable young families that Insights serve live in poverty and often rely on welfare. Without support from Insights young
moms often have more pregnancy complications, low birth-weight babies, and their children have more health problems.

At Insights the goal is to help teen parents establish safe, healthy
and productive lives for themselves and their children.  When this is
accomplished there will be less teen crime, violence and homelessness.  Everybody wins -the children, the parents, their extended families and  the community at large.  Visit Insights' webpage at http://www.insightstpp.org/about.html

Pathfinder Academy

"Alternative Education Program for Pregnant and Parenting Teens."

Pathfinder Academy is an alternative education program for pregnant and parenting teens, ages 14-21, who reside in the Portland Public Schools attendance area

The academic focus is on creating an individualized program that meets the needs of each student.  Reading, writing, and math are all emphasized as foundation skills for any academic pursuit. GED preparation and test practice is offered, as well as Parenting and Health/Nutrition. A teen parent support group meets weekly.  In addition to GED preparation, Pathfinder Academy offers a school-to-work program. This includes classroom instruction, resume preparation, job readiness skills, and college tuition assistance.

Licensed childcare is provided off-site by Early Head Start for children from six weeks to age three.  Age-appropriate activities are offered in a loving and nurturing environment. Hands-on parent involvement is also an important part of the program.
